What is a skin fungus?
As the name suggests, skin fungus (dermatomycosis), or fungal infection of the skin or its appendages (hair, nails), is an infection with fungi. Infection is possible from person to person, animal to human, as well as via contaminated objects, e.g. in swimming pools, fitness clubs etc.
It depends on the respective pathogen (often filamentous fungi (dermatophytes), yeast fungi (shoot fungi), moulds) which symptoms occur on which part of the body. Fungal diseases can affect certain areas of the body or spread over the whole body.
Fungal infections often begin with a reddening of the skin, in the further course of the disease the inflammatory skin areas begin to flake and often fade in their centre. Fungal infections are often accompanied by more or less severe itching, in severe cases pain occurs.
What types of fungus are there?
Among the most common fungal diseases of the skin are
Foot fungus (Tinea pedis), typically grey-white skin changes and tears in the spaces between the toes, or on the sole of the foot, hand fungus (Tinea manuum), which often starts with blisters that develop into round, scaly foci, ringworm (Tinea corporis), in which reddened, itchy skin areas appear on the trunk and extremities, and head fungus (Tinea capitis), in which the skin changes on the head are often accompanied by broken hair and hair loss. A fungal infection of the nails (onychomycosis or tinea unguium), manifests itself with a typical course in which the nail initially loses its shine until it becomes discoloured and brittle.
In a fungal infection of the oral mucosa (oral thrush in infancy and toddlers), the typical signs of the disease are white deposits on the cheek mucous membrane or tongue and inflammation of the surrounding tissue.
How is the treatment carried out?
