How does the Botox treatment work?

Depending on the number of zones, the treatment takes about 5 to 20 minutes, after which you are immediately able to resume your day. Bruising can occasionally occur.

  2. The treatment

    5–20 min

    Botox is injected into specific points in the muscles responsible for the formation of wrinkles, where it specifically inhibits the transmission of nerve signals. The injection sites can be covered with make-up afterwards.

  3. Aftercare

    approx. 1 week

    For twelve hours, avoid heavy physical exertion and finger contact with the injection sites; for one week, avoid sauna, sun, sunbeds and sport where possible. You should tense the treated muscles frequently for a few hours.

  4. Top-up

    after 3–6 months

Frequently asked questions about Botox treatment

Botox (botulinum toxin or BTA) is a naturally occurring bacterial protein. It is secreted by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and isolated through complex purification steps. Botulinum toxin is used in aesthetic medicine to smooth wrinkles in the face, neck and décolletage and for treatment of increased sweat gland activity. In addition, Botox is very successful for migraine attacks.

Botox is used to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet, but also lines on the nose (bunny lines), the chin and wrinkles around the corners of the mouth. The wrinkles in the skin appear in these areas due to the frequent contraction of the muscles, i.e. facial expressions. The treatment relaxes the muscles, the skin recovers and becomes smoother. As a result, the wrinkles that have formed in the epidermis also fade over time.

Depending on the number of zones you have treated, a Botox treatment takes about 5 to 20 minutes. If a consultation is required beforehand, you should plan on spending about half an hour with us. Yes! You are able to resume your activities immediately after Botox treatment. Occasionally bruises may occur, but these can usually be covered with make-up.

In rare cases there may be skin irritation or infection, slight swelling or a small bruise. Therefore, no blood-thinning medication should be taken at least 1 week before the treatment. Very rarely temporary drooping of the upper eyelid or eyebrow, watery eyes, headache, dry mouth, tiredness, numbness or a general feeling of illness may occur. All side effects are transient according to current knowledge. Botulinum toxin must not be used in patients with nerve or muscle disorders or in patients with known pregnancy.

Taking certain medications (e.g. vitamin C and various antibiotics) can weaken the effect or cancel it completely. After the injection you should avoid heavy physical exertion and finger contact with the injection sites for twelve hours. For 1 week you should, where possible, avoid all activities that lead to increased blood flow (e.g. saunas, sun, sunbeds, sport). So that the substance distributes well in the muscle, you should tense the treated muscles frequently for a few hours.

Yes! Wrinkle injections take about 5–20 minutes on average. Afterwards, the injection sites can be covered with make-up. Since treatment with Botox or fillers is very quick, most of our clients can have treatment during their lunch break and go straight back to their activities.

Botox is a liquid protein with which certain muscles that contribute to wrinkle formation are relaxed in a targeted way. This results in less wrinkle formation. The substance is injected directly into the muscle that causes the wrinkles. The effect wears off after 4 to 6 months. A hyaluronic acid filler is a natural gel-like substance that is placed in or under the skin. Thanks to its water-binding ability, volume builds up in the tissue, and wrinkles are thus reduced or the skin is smoothed. Depending on the substance used, it is broken down by the body over a period of between 9 and 24 months.

After a treatment, physical rest is necessary. Extreme physical exertion such as sport, saunas and sunbeds is therefore not advised for three to five days, depending on the extent of the treatment. After that you are fully able to resume your activities. You should not expose yourself to intense sunlight within the first week.

Expression lines are genetically determined and are caused by overactive muscles. When botulinum toxin is injected into the muscle, it specifically inhibits the transmission of signals, so that the muscle concerned can no longer be tensed as usual. The relaxation of the specifically treated muscles smooths the wrinkles without changing the normal facial expression. When used in a targeted way, botulinum toxin (Botox) inhibits sweat gland activity and reduces migraine symptoms.

Before each therapy we discuss with you which regions should be treated. With a very fine needle the substance is injected into the region to be treated. The puncture is minimal (patients sometimes describe a slight burning sensation), but we can also offer you a local anesthetic. The effect sets in after 2 to 3 days. The full effect is visible after about a week. The full effect lasts 4-6 months for wrinkle smoothing, and 12 months on average for sweat gland treatment. In extremely rare cases, the effect can be completely absent.
