Lip correction for naturally full lips

The lips play a central role in our appearance and are a symbol of attractiveness and youthfulness. However, not everyone is satisfied with the fullness or shape of their lips – sometimes they lack volume, symmetry or clearly defined contours. Lip correction with hyaluronic acid can gently and effectively improve these aspects. Not only is volume built up in a targeted way, but the natural shape of your lips is also harmoniously emphasised without looking unnatural.

Hyaluronic acid lip fillers for naturally full lips

As an endogenous substance, hyaluronic acid is an important component of the connective tissue. With increasing age, however, the skin’s own hyaluronic acid content decreases, causing our skin to lose moisture and elasticity. One of the consequences, for example, is that the distance between the nose and the red of the lips becomes longer over the years, as the moisture content of our lips decreases in the course of the natural ageing process.

By injecting small doses of hyaluronic acid, the loss of lip volume in old age can be compensated, the lips are virtually rehydrated. Depending on the patient’s wishes, the specialists at Dermacare also correct undesirable asymmetries, contour lips and sensitively build up volume where it is desired.

Lip correction with hyaluronic acid may be an option if:

  • You want to build up your lips (enlargement / augmentation / full lips)
  • You want to correct natural asymmetries
  • You want to recover lost volume (rehydration)
  • You are dissatisfied with your lips treated with hyaluronic acid
  • Nodules have formed after a previous hyaluronic acid treatment, you would like the hyaluronic acid dissolved, or you wish to have a correction of the hyaluronic acid treatment

Individual consultation

In a consultation, the doctors will discuss your individual wishes and the expected treatment result. You will learn everything you need to know about the procedure and aftercare.

How lip correction with hyaluronic acid works

Before the treatment, a numbing cream is applied and left to take effect for 20 minutes; the filler also contains a small amount of anaesthetic. The result is visible immediately.

  1. Anamnesis Questionnaire

The procedure for lip fillers at Dermacare in Vienna is explained in detail below. A medical history questionnaire is completed during the consultation or before each initial treatment. This allows possible risks to be identified and prevented.

  2. Medical consultation

First of all a preliminary consultation with the treating doctor takes place. Prepare for the consultation and speak openly about your wishes and expectations. Your treating doctor at DERMACARE will discuss with you which type of hyaluronic acid is best suited for you before the lip correction treatment.

  3. Digital image

Before the treatment, a digital photo of your face is taken to document your treatment progress in detail.

  4. Numbness of the lips

Before the hyaluronic acid is injected, an anaesthetic cream is applied to the lips; after 20 minutes it reduces sensitivity to pain.

  5. Treatment

Now the actual treatment begins, during which the hyaluronic acid is injected in the discussed amount. The filler also contains a small amount of anesthetic to make the treatment more comfortable. The treatment takes between 15 and 30 minutes. The results of lip correction with hyaluronic acid filler are immediately visible.

  6. After the treatment

Hyaluronic acid products are broken down over time by the body's natural metabolism. A refresher treatment is usually required after 9 - 12 months, depending on individual needs and the area treated.

  7. What should you pay attention to?

After the treatment, there may be a slight swelling, bruising, pain or pressure sensitivity at the injection site. These reactions are generally described as mild to moderate and usually disappear shortly after the injection. They usually subside within a day or two.

Frequently asked questions about treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers

Hyaluronic acid is an endogenous substance. Chemically speaking, hyaluronic acid is a chain of sugar molecules with the property of binding water. In anti-aging, hyaluronic acid is used against wrinkles because it can bind about 6000 times more water than its own weight, so 1 gram of hyaluronic acid can bind 6 litres of water. In the human body, most hyaluronic acid is stored in the skin, where it holds the cells together. It is also found in joints and in the eyes.

From the age of 25 onwards, the body’s own production of hyaluronic acid decreases. At the age of 60, only 10% of the initial hyaluronic acid level can be detected in the body.

The treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers aims at the cushioning effect that the preparation produces when used correctly. In addition, hyaluronic acid binds water and hydrates the tissue; the refreshed moisture balance leaves the skin and lips looking plump and fresh.

To correct the jawline, known as jawline contouring, Dermacare uses the Ellansé filler for the treatment, which is characterised by an individually adjustable longevity. Depending on which product is chosen (one-, two-, three- or four-year longevity), your facial contour remains unchanged for up to four years after jawline contouring at Dermacare. The longer the chosen filler lasts, the more expensive the respective product and treatment.

Depending on the region to be treated, a treatment takes about 10 to 30 minutes. If a consultation is required beforehand, you should plan on spending about an hour with us. Our doctors take their time to give you detailed advice and make the treatment as pleasant as possible.

On the day of treatment you will be with us for about 1 hour. The actual treatment will take about 30 minutes and a local anesthetic cream will be applied beforehand, which needs 20 minutes to take effect.

Blood-thinning medication (e.g. aspirin or ibuprofen) should, if possible, be stopped a few days before treatment with hyaluronic acid fillers, as it promotes the formation of haematomas (bruises). If haematomas do occur nevertheless, they disappear completely after a few days (about 5–7). If you are known to be prone to herpes, it may be advisable to take herpes tablets as a preventive measure.

Hyaluronic acid is extremely well tolerated, but since any intervention in the human body carries risks, possible side effects range from frequently occurring reactions such as redness and swelling to very rare complications such as the blockage of a blood vessel or an allergic reaction. Treatment with hyaluronic filler should therefore always be carried out by an experienced doctor who knows the possible risks and side effects and can respond to them if necessary. Common side effects are pain from the insertion of the needle, a feeling of tightness, itching, swelling of the lips (after hyaluronic acid lip treatment) and bruising, which subsides within a few days. Rarely, circulatory disturbances, infections at the injection site, and displacement and nodule formation of the injected substance occur.

On the first day after treatment, the swelling that sets in shortly after treatment is at its strongest. Bruising on the lips is not unusual. Both the swelling and the bruising subside noticeably after 1–2 days before disappearing completely (5–7 days). If desired, a medication with a decongestant effect can be prescribed. You should take it easy for 2 days after treatment, and avoid sport, saunas, alcohol and blood-thinning medication such as aspirin and ibuprofen.

When performed by an experienced doctor who applies the hyaluronic acid filler correctly, the use of fillers is a safe procedure with few side effects. As with any medical treatment, however, side effects and complications can never be ruled out with absolute certainty. Since every injection causes minimal tissue trauma, reactions such as itching, swelling, redness, slight tenderness or haematomas (bruises) may occur, which subside after a few days (5–7 days). If desired, a medication with a decongestant effect can be used to support the healing process.

Treatment with a hyaluronic filler (including lip correction with hyaluronic acid) should be avoided if any of the following apply:
  • People under 18 years of age
  • Pregnancy
  • Breastfeeding
  • Known allergy to hyaluronic acid
  • Chemotherapy within the last 12 months
  • Taking anticoagulants (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac)
  • Acute infectious diseases (e.g. flu, herpes)
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Known wound healing disorders, tendency towards hypertrophic scarring
  • Increased tendency to bleed and blood disorders

Hyaluronic acid has the advantage that it can be dissolved with the enzyme hylase. If you are dissatisfied with the results of a previous lip correction, or if residues of a previous treatment are to be removed, make an appointment for a consultation. Even if nodules have formed, they can either be dissolved or massaged out.
