The laser as the most effective method for removing permanent make-up

How PMU removal with a laser works at Dermacare and which types of PMU can be removed.

If you no longer want your permanent make-up because it no longer reflects your current taste, you can have it removed. The Dermacare beauty clinic in Vienna offers a gentle and effective way to remove unwanted permanent make-up safely and with minimal discomfort. Thanks to state-of-the-art laser technology, the pigments can be treated precisely and faded step by step.

Whether you want to remove unwanted or botched permanent make-up on the lips (lip contour) or eyebrows (eyebrow line, microblading), the Q-Switched laser with its four different wavelengths (532nm, 595nm, 660nm and 1064nm) works precisely and, unlike other lasers, removes almost any colour gently and without leaving any residue.

In this way, permanent make-up disappears gently, completely and without scarring.

The proven Q-Switched Nd:YAG laser enables the best and fastest possible treatment results. The laser device emits short pulses of laser light energy in the picosecond range. This does not put any additional strain on your skin, as the light only penetrates the colour pigments stored in the skin and shatters them. Your lymphatic system then removes the colour pigments in a process lasting several weeks, or a crust forms on the skin, which transports the colour out of the body. Several treatments at intervals of several weeks are always necessary to completely remove PMUs. The number of treatments depends on the following factors, among others:

  • Colour of the PMU
  • Size of the PMU
  • Grooving depth
  • Stamped ink volume
  • Function of the lymphatic system
  • Your own involvement after the treatments

During a personal consultation at Dermacare, doctors and specialists will provide you with comprehensive information about your treatment options and, with a view to the planned success of your treatment, will draw up a treatment plan, from which both the duration of the treatment cycle (number of sessions, interval between sessions) and the costs incurred will be determined.

Depending on the colour of the permanent make-up, the doctor selects the appropriate laser. Dermacare is the only institute in Austria that has the latest PICO laser from Lutronic. With its four wavelengths (532nm, 595nm, 660nm and 1064nm) almost all colours can now be removed without residue.

Treatment with the laser to remove permanent make-up is suitable for the following common permanent make-ups:

  • Eyebrows (remove microblading)
  • Lash line extensions
  • Lip contouring
  • Beauty spots

Permanent make-up removal: Treatment procedure

The laser treatment feels similar to having permanent make-up applied. If you want to feel as little as possible, you can apply a numbing cream beforehand; the eyebrows are air-cooled.

  1. Digital photo of the skin

The permanent make-up removal procedure at Dermacare in Vienna is explained in detail below. Before each treatment a digital photo of your PMU is taken to document your treatment progress.

  2. Desinfection

After disinfection, the laser treatment begins; it feels similar to having permanent make-up applied. If you prefer to feel as little as possible, it is recommended to apply an anaesthetic cream beforehand.

  3. Laser treatment

The permanent make-up is then treated with the special Q-switched Nd:YAG laser or picolaser. To make the treatment more pleasant, the eyebrows are air-cooled.

  4. Cooling of the lasered area

After the treatment, a cool pack is placed on the treated area for 10 minutes.

  5. Anti-inflammatory cream

An antiseptic cream is applied to prevent inflammation.

  6. Aftercare

The immediate reaction of the skin to the treatment is often slight redness and swelling, which disappears by itself. A thin crust then forms in the lasered region. To care for the crust, ointments and creams are available to support the healing process of the skin.

Your attending physicians will provide you with comprehensive information on aftercare and care of the affected area and will be available at all times to answer your questions.

After the treatment, UV radiation should be avoided for several weeks, as it can promote unwanted pigmentation.

After about 4-6 weeks, a significant lightening of the permanent make-up will be visible and the follow-up treatment can be carried out.

Frequently asked questions about laser removal of permanent make-up

With the Q-Switched PICO laser, permanent make-up on the eyebrows, including microblading, eyelids and lips can be gently and effectively removed or corrected. Depending on the colour, colour depth and age of the PMU, different numbers of sessions are necessary to make the PMU invisible.

  • Eyebrows (Microblading)
  • Eyeliner (lash line)
  • Lip contouring
  • Beauty spots

During the medical consultation at Dermacare Vienna, the specialists draw up a treatment plan tailored individually to you and inform you extensively about the possible risks of treatment, the treatment result to be expected and the costs that will arise for you. Only after examining the PMU do the doctors at Dermacare determine how many sessions at what intervals are needed to achieve the desired treatment result. If treatment takes place, nothing is charged for the consultation. If treatment does not take place straight away, a fee of €60 is charged, which we will credit back to you against a future treatment.

During the laser treatment the colour pigments of the permanent make-up are gradually lightened until they finally disappear. The first results are already visible a few days after the first treatment with the Q-Switched Laser. Until the permanent make-up disappears completely, 4 to 6 treatments at intervals of 5 to 8 weeks are normally expected.

For complete removal of permanent make-up, 4 to 6 treatments at intervals of 5 to 8 weeks are usually required. The number of treatments required depends on factors such as the colour, size, depth and age of the permanent make-up, and can therefore only be estimated individually in a personal consultation. The intervals between treatments depend on the skin's individual healing characteristics and therefore also vary. At the first check-up after treatment, the progress of wound healing is assessed. Since the colours of the permanent make-up are lightened with every treatment, a visible change can be seen after just one session.

In most cases, permanent make-up can be removed completely. If desired, it can also be only partly removed, lightened or corrected. With partial removal and correction of permanent make-up, either whole pigments are removed, for example when an eyebrow line that is too long is shortened, or unwanted pigments are lightened so that they are hardly visible any more. The approach to removing permanent make-up depends on the desired treatment result. In a personal consultation you have the opportunity to state your wishes. The doctors at Dermacare will inform you comprehensively about your treatment options and agree treatment goals with you.

Individual pain perception differs from person to person. While some “feel nothing at all” during laser treatment, others report a burning or stinging sensation during and after the treatment (which we describe as “almost painless”) – discomfort that can also occur during the healing process. Before laser treatment, we recommend applying an anaesthetic cream to the relevant area, which reduces pain sensitivity. The doctors at Dermacare will inform you in detail in a personal consultation about the course of the treatment, which can in principle be carried out without anaesthesia and without medication.

For complete removal of permanent make-up, 4 to 6 treatments at intervals of 5 to 8 weeks are usually required. The number of treatments required varies individually, as it depends on factors such as the colour, size, depth and age of the permanent make-up. In a personal consultation with our doctors, the permanent make-up is assessed in order to draw up a personal treatment plan that determines the number of treatments, the treatment interval and the costs involved.

During treatment with the Q-Switched PICO laser, the laser light, with an extremely short pulse duration and at the same time high energy, hits the colour pigments introduced into the skin, which absorb the laser light more strongly than the surrounding skin. The colour particles are dissolved or shattered by the laser, and the body excretes their remnants via the lymphatic system or expels them through crust formation. The special feature of the Q-Switched laser with 4 different wavelengths (532nm, 595nm, 660nm and 1064nm) is that it prevents the colour reversal that is so feared in tattoo removal. It can happen that, while colour pigments are being removed with a laser of one wavelength, a red tattooed area turns green, which has to be removed with another wavelength. In treatment with the Q-Switched laser, colour reversal is counteracted by using four wavelengths. The Q-Switched laser removes all colours of the spectrum without residue, except light yellow and white. For complete removal of permanent make-up we usually recommend four to six treatments at intervals of five to eight weeks. How many applications are needed to achieve the desired treatment result depends on the nature of the permanent make-up to be removed (colour, depth, age) and is assessed in a personal consultation. The duration of the treatment cycle can therefore only be determined once the doctor has set the number of treatments. Since the pigments of the PMU are lightened more and more with each laser treatment, first results are already visible after the first treatment.

Even with laser treatment correctly performed by trained doctors, problems with crusting or scarring can occur in rare cases, and pigment shifts or temporary hypo-/hyperpigmentation may also occur, which usually resolves by itself after 3–4 months. If you are prone to pigmentation disorders, or you know you have a tendency to scarring, please inform your treating doctors, who will point out all possible risks and explain side effects to you comprehensively in a personal consultation.

Because different wavelengths have to be used to remove pigments of different colours with the laser in order to reach the individual shades, laser treatment of tattoos or permanent make-up can cause an originally red area to turn green and then no longer be removable. This phenomenon is known as colour reversal. Since almost all colours can be treated with the Q-Switched laser, a possible colour reversal can also be treated effectively.

In general, skin areas treated with the laser should be protected for about a week. To support the healing process, we recommend a suitable ointment for application to the skin, such as Bepanthen Plus. To avoid pigmentation disorders, the affected area should not be exposed to UV radiation for several weeks, and sunbed visits should be avoided both before and after treatment. As long as the treated area is protected from the sun accordingly, you can go about your usual daily routine immediately after treatment.

Yes. The treatment is very safe and specially suited to the sensitive eye area. The laser works precisely without damaging the surrounding tissue. Professional protective measures are used during the treatment to protect the eyes. At Dermacare, eyeliner removal is carried out exclusively by experienced doctors and specialists.

Dermacare uses an advanced Q-switched Nd:YAG laser with four wavelengths (532 nm, 595 nm, 660 nm and 1064 nm). This allows all colour pigments to be removed reliably – including difficult shades such as blue, green or red. The technology is particularly gentle on the skin and does not lead to scarring.

Depending on individual sensitivity, the treatment may be slightly uncomfortable, but it is well tolerated. Since the laser works very precisely and does not damage the skin, the eyelid area is irritated only briefly. Most clients find the treatment easy to bear.

The number of sessions required depends on the depth of the pigmentation, the colour, the size of the eyeliner and your individual skin type. In a consultation, we create a personal treatment plan. There are four to six weeks between sessions so that the skin has enough time to regenerate.

Yes. With the precise laser technology, both complete and partial corrections can be carried out. Wide or irregular lines can be specifically lightened or refined.

The safest way to remove permanent eyeliner is with a professional laser treatment. At Dermacare, we work with a particularly gentle method that is specially suited to the sensitive eye area. The laser breaks down the pigments gradually without damaging the skin.

It is important that the treatment is carried out by experienced professionals. At Dermacare, the treatment is performed by, among others, Dr Ciovica personally, who has a great deal of experience with eyeliner removal. Through the combination of modern technology and medical expertise, the removal is carried out as safely as possible – gently, in a controlled way and without scarring.
