Professional scar treatment for smooth, flawless skin

Which scars can be treated, how the laser treatment works and what the procedure involves.

There is a solution: scar treatment in Vienna at Dermacare offers an innovative way to treat your scars in a targeted manner and to improve the appearance of your skin in the long term.

With the help of the fractional CO2 laser, one of the most modern technologies for skin renewal, scars can be significantly reduced. Find out how the treatment works and whether it is also suitable for your skin.

Scars are the result of a natural healing process of the skin. Depending on the type and depth of the injury, the tissue can heal irregularly, leading to noticeable scars. Hypertrophic scars or acne scars in particular can visibly change the skin's structure and burden those affected not only outwardly but also emotionally.

Many people turn to creams or home remedies for scars, but these often bring only minimal improvements. A professional treatment such as scar laser treatment with a fractional CO2 laser, on the other hand, can penetrate deep into the skin, specifically stimulate regeneration and renew the scar tissue from the inside out.

Treatment with the fractional CO2 laser is based on targeted skin renewal. The high-frequency laser beam penetrates the upper layers of the skin and removes damaged tissue in a controlled way. This precise micro-injury stimulates the skin's natural healing process, creating fresh, new skin cells. At the same time, the laser energy stimulates collagen production, which leads to smoother and firmer skin.

In contrast to older methods, the skin is not removed over a large area but treated at specific points. The fractional CO2 laser delivers microscopically small heat stimuli that gently renew the skin structure without placing unnecessary strain on the surrounding tissue. This makes the treatment particularly gentle and significantly shortens the healing time.

Benefits of the fractional CO2 laser:

  • Precise removal of skin without damage to the surrounding tissue
  • Deep-acting stimulation of collagen production
  • Short healing time of only a few days

Fractional CO2 laser technology is suitable for a wide variety of scar types. The CO2 laser is particularly effective for:

The most common types of scar for which the CO₂ laser can be used successfully are explained in more detail below.

Acne scars – for a smooth, clear complexion

Removing acne scars with the CO2 laser can noticeably refine the appearance of the skin and provide an even complexion. After acne, unsightly scars often remain, making the skin look uneven. Deep scars in particular reflect the light irregularly, making the complexion look dull and uneven.

With treatment in Vienna, these irregularities can be smoothed in a targeted way. The fractional CO2 laser gently renews the top layer of skin and stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers. The result is smoother, more radiant skin.

Surgical scars – when healing leaves traces

Laser treatment of surgical scars, for example after a caesarean section, can help to reduce the visible traces of an operation and make the skin look smoother. Scars in clearly visible places such as the face or abdomen in particular are often perceived as bothersome and can affect well-being.

Through targeted laser treatment, the scar tissue can be refined and made softer. The laser stimulates skin renewal, so that the scar gradually becomes less noticeable and blends more harmoniously into the skin.

Accident scars – softening visible reminders

Every scar tells a story, but not everyone wants to wear it on their skin. Whether from a fall, a cut or a deep wound, accident scars can be irregular in shape and stand out from the rest of the skin in colour. Modern scar treatment in Vienna makes it possible to reduce these marks with high-precision laser therapy.

Hypertrophic scars – when the skin heals too much

Hypertrophic scars develop when the skin forms excessive scar tissue after an injury. These raised, often reddened scars can not only be visually bothersome but can also feel uncomfortably tight or itchy. Scar treatment with laser addresses exactly this by reducing the excessive tissue formation in a targeted way.

With the fractional CO2 laser, the thickened scar tissue is gently removed and skin renewal is stimulated. The result is a flatter scar that blends better into the surrounding skin and appears less conspicuous.

Burn scars – when the skin changes

In scar treatment with the fractional CO2 laser, the tissue hardened by the burn is gently removed while the deeper layers of skin are stimulated to regenerate. This promotes the elasticity of the skin and visibly smooths the surface. Even deeper burn scars can be significantly softened in this way.

Stretch marks and pregnancy stretch marks – bringing the skin back into balance

Whether after pregnancy, through rapid growth in adolescence or weight fluctuations, stretch marks are an issue for many people. These fine, tear-like scars develop when the skin stretches too quickly and the underlying connective tissue is overstrained.

While they often appear reddish or purple at first, they fade over time but remain as visible lines. With scar treatment using laser, these marks can be treated in a targeted way. Laser treatment of scars promotes skin renewal, tightens the tissue and lightens the marks. As a result, the skin looks more even and firmer overall and regains elasticity.

Even older scars that have remained unchanged for years can be significantly smoothed and made less noticeable by the treatment.

Before every treatment there is a detailed consultation in which the skin is analysed and the appropriate approach is determined. Depending on the scar type and skin condition, the intensity of the fractional CO2 laser is individually adjusted. During the treatment, the laser is guided over the affected area of skin, where it specifically treats the scar tissue.

The session itself is almost painless, as the skin is prepared beforehand with a numbing cream. After the treatment, the skin may be slightly red or swollen for a few days, similar to mild sunburn. This reaction is completely normal and a sign that the skin is beginning to renew itself. Visible improvements are possible after the very first session, although several sessions four to six weeks apart are usually recommended for optimal results.

At Dermacare Vienna, we place the highest value on safe, gentle and effective scar treatment. Our specialists have many years of experience and work with state-of-the-art technology to achieve the best possible results. By using the fractional CO2 laser, scars can be treated in a targeted way without damaging the surrounding tissue.

Another advantage of the treatment is the comparatively short healing time. While surgical procedures often require recovery phases lasting weeks, the skin heals within a few days after laser treatment of scars. The treatment is also suitable for virtually all skin types and can be adapted individually to different needs.

Your benefits at a glance

  • Gentle removal of scar tissue
  • Stimulation of the skin's natural regeneration
  • Fast healing with short downtime
  • Lasting improvement of the skin structure
  • Suitable for all skin types

One of the greatest strengths of laser scar treatment is the lasting improvement in the skin's appearance. Thanks to the stimulated collagen production, the tissue renews itself over weeks and months, so that the appearance of the scar improves steadily. Even after the sessions have ended, the regeneration process continues, resulting in long-term results.

If you want a visible improvement in your skin and finally wish to get rid of bothersome scars, laser scar treatment at Dermacare Vienna is an effective solution. With state-of-the-art technology and individually tailored treatment plans, we help you make your skin look smooth and even again.

Professional treatments

Through specialist training of our team, we ensure the highest treatment quality. Medical treatments are carried out by independent doctors who have many years of practice in aesthetic medicine.

Treatment procedure for scar removal

The treatment is carried out on an outpatient basis with a numbing cream; general anaesthesia is not necessary. During the laser treatment you may feel warmth or a slight burning sensation.

  1. Medical history questionnaire

The treatment procedure for scar removal in Vienna at Dermacare is explained in detail below. Before the first treatment, a medical history questionnaire is completed. This allows possible risks to be identified and prevented.

  2. Consultation

This is followed by a detailed preliminary discussion with one of the specialists. Prepare for the discussion and speak openly about your wishes and expectations.

  3. Digital photo / disinfection / anaesthesia

Before every treatment, a digital photograph of your skin is taken in order to document your treatment progress precisely. The skin is disinfected and, if necessary, numbed with an anaesthetic cream.

  4. Laser treatment

The area of skin is then treated with the special CO2 laser. To make the treatment more comfortable, the skin is cooled with cold air.

  5. Cooling of the lasered area

After the treatment, a cool pack is placed on the treated area for 10 minutes.

  6. Anti-inflammatory cream

To prevent inflammation, an antiseptic cream is applied.

  7. Aftercare

As an immediate reaction of the skin to the treatment, slight redness and swelling often occur, which disappear again on their own. A thin crust then forms in the lasered region. For aftercare of the crust, a choice of ointments and creams is available to support the skin's healing process.

Your treating doctors will give you comprehensive information on the aftercare and care of the affected area and are available at any time to answer your questions.

After the treatment, UV radiation should be avoided for several weeks, as it can promote unwanted pigmentation.

After about 4-6 weeks, a follow-up treatment can be carried out if required.

Frequently asked questions about scar treatment with the CO2 laser

Yes. The laser works extremely precisely and protects the surrounding tissue while the age spots are lasered away. At Dermacare, every treatment is carried out by experienced specialist doctors.
If you have questions about safety or your skin type, you can contact us at any time.

Fractional laser treatment is carried out as an outpatient procedure. Treatment takes place under local anaesthetic. General anaesthesia is not necessary. Before treatment, an anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated and works for up to 60 minutes. After the application time, the cream is removed from the skin, and the pain sensitivity of the skin area to be treated is markedly reduced. For safety reasons, the doctor and the patient wear protective goggles throughout the laser treatment. The treatment takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Patients are treated lying down. The fractional, pinpoint laser treatment can cause a slight burning sensation of the skin. The laser is lifted off repeatedly during treatment, and the treating doctor watches the reaction to the stimulus from the laser closely. If you would like to tell us something during the treatment, you can do so at any time. However, we ask that you keep the protective goggles on throughout the treatment. During laser treatment a smell reminiscent of burnt hair may develop. This is normal and harmless. After treatment the skin may feel like sunburn for a few hours. The redness subsides after one to 5 days, and slight swelling may occur for one to two days. As soon as new skin replaces the dead tissue, flaking occurs, which indicates that the healing process is beginning and new skin substance is being formed. Depending on the intensity setting of the laser, the skin's regeneration time, and therefore also the healing process, varies. During this time we recommend treating the area with an ointment that supports the healing process and at the same time has a soothing effect. Depending on the intensity of the treatment and the patient's individual circumstances, the reactions mentioned above vary from person to person. Downtime is 3 to 7 days, depending on treatment intensity. The formation of new collagen and elastic fibres takes several weeks, however, so the improvement in the skin's appearance can only be assessed after about 4–8 weeks. An optimal result, which lasts several years, is achieved with at least three treatments at intervals of four to six weeks, although individual lifestyle (sun, smoking, etc.) always plays a decisive role.

Treatment with the CO2 laser is almost painless. A feeling of warmth, up to a burning sensation of the skin, is possible during laser treatment. A burning or sore feeling, like sunburn, may also be felt for several hours after treatment. Itching often occurs during the healing process; anti-inflammatory creams and ointments provide relief.

Treatment with the fractional laser, based on the skin's natural capacity for regeneration, is regarded as one of the most modern methods of skin renewal and skin tightening. Unsightly scars are gently removed or smoothed with the laser procedure. The laser beam works on the skin at individual points. The energy of the laser is split into a thousand tiny dots that penetrate into deeper layers of the skin. Thanks to the pinpoint thermal effect of the laser beam, skin renewal is stimulated and the formation of new collagen fibres is promoted. This refines the skin structure, pigment spots disappear, and scars and fine lines are visibly reduced, depending on severity, after the very first application.

In treatment with the CO2 laser, scars on the face, neck and hands are gently smoothed. Through the thermal power of the laser, the upper layer of skin is removed, while the regeneration of the skin and the production of collagen fibres are stimulated at the same time. Because the skin is hit by the laser at individual points, parts of the tissue remain undamaged, which has a positive effect on the duration of the healing process, which lasts only a few days (usually 3–5 days). For deeper scars, the treatment may need to be repeated to achieve the desired result. The treatment result and healing time depend on individual factors. The specialist doctors will be happy to advise you comprehensively on treatment options with the CO2 laser for scars and acne scars at the Dermacare institute.

The procedure with a CO2 laser is almost painless and is carried out as an outpatient procedure. When the CO2 laser is used to remove pigment spots, success comes very quickly compared with other methods of skin renewal such as peels, creams and ointments. Results are visible after just one treatment or 3–7 days after it. The treatment promotes the formation of new skin and activates the body's own collagen production. Fine lines, scars and irregularities disappear, and the skin feels smooth, firm and fresh.

Noticeable results appear after the very first treatment. Experience shows that three to five treatments are needed to reach the desired treatment result. The treatments take place at intervals of four to six weeks. After laser treatment the skin is tightened and refined, and an even complexion creates a fresh overall impression. Pigmentation disorders and spots that appear with the natural ageing process of the skin can often be successfully removed after a single treatment with the CO2 laser. Smaller fine lines and scars are also visibly reduced after one treatment. To smooth wrinkles permanently, several sessions are usually needed. The surface of deeper scars can be smoothed with the CO2 laser so that they are less visible. Depending on skin condition, three to five treatments at intervals of four to six weeks are recommended for an optimal result. In a personal consultation we can give you a more precise assessment of the individual treatment result you can expect.

The laser treatment takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of the skin area to be treated. Before the laser treatment, the skin is numbed with an anaesthetic cream, which needs up to 60 minutes to take effect.

CO2 laser treatment is one of the minimally invasive treatments and offers a particularly gentle yet effective way of renewing the skin and smoothing wrinkles. When the laser is used correctly by trained doctors, possible risks and side effects are comparatively low. Allergic reactions or risks such as those of surgical procedures can be ruled out with laser treatment. Redness and slight swelling after treatment, as well as the formation of a crust on the treated skin area, are normal and, like possible itching, are part of the skin's healing process. Superficial, small skin injuries that may bleed are also harmless. Pigment changes of the skin occur rarely and only disappear after a few weeks. In rare cases cold sores occur, which is why we recommend taking prophylaxis if you are prone to herpes.

Since the CO2 laser should be used on untanned skin, we recommend avoiding extended sunbathing and sunbed visits for about 4 weeks before treatment with the CO2 laser at the Dermacare institute in Vienna. If you are known to be prone to herpes, taking herpes prophylaxis after the treatment may be advisable.

After treatment with the CO2 laser the skin may be red and feel like sunburn. Cooling the treated area is, however, not advised, so as not to interrupt the desired healing process. Wound ointments and moisturising creams relieve possible discomfort and speed up healing in the days after treatment. As long as there is still flaking, it should not be covered with make-up (risk of tattooing). Crusts should not be scratched off or rubbed away after showering. In the first 10 days, hot environments (sauna, hot showers…) should be avoided. Since the newly formed skin is very sensitive, direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least 4 weeks after treatment; after the crusts have fallen off, we recommend using SPF 50+ or higher several times a day. If you are prone to herpes, taking herpes prophylaxis for about one week after treatment is advisable. A follow-up check takes place after about four weeks.

Since sunlight promotes skin aging, we generally recommend regular application of a suitable sunscreen. After the laser treatment, direct sunlight should be avoided for at least 4 weeks. We recommend using SPF 50+ several times a day.

In general, a pain-relieving cream applied before treatment is sufficient. To promote the healing process and relieve any discomfort that may occur, such as itching, we recommend suitable ointments and creams.
