How age spots arise, how the fractional laser treats them and what to observe after the treatment.
At Dermacare in Vienna, we offer you innovative solutions to remove age spots effectively and make your hands look youthful and radiant again – using state-of-the-art CO2 laser technology. But how does this treatment option work?
Dermacare explains methods against age spots/pigment spots
Age spots (lentigo senilis) are brownish discolourations of the skin that occur mainly on sun-exposed areas such as the face, hands and décolletage. They are caused by an overproduction of the skin pigment melanin, which is stimulated by UV rays.
The backs of the hands are particularly affected, as the skin there is thin and delicate and is often exposed to the sun. In addition to pigmentation disorders, the hands also suffer a loss of moisture and volume, which ages the skin further.
Dermacare Vienna offers two proven treatment methods here: a CO2 laser treatment and, if desired, a subsequent volume restoration with hyaluronic acid fillers.
One of the most effective methods for removing age spots is treatment with the CO2 laser. This state-of-the-art technology makes it possible to treat the spots precisely without damaging the surrounding tissue.
The laser beam penetrates the skin and removes the upper layers of skin, gently eliminating the pigmentation disorders. At the same time, collagen production is stimulated, which results in firmer, smoother skin.
This method shows impressive results, especially for age spots on the hands.
A fractional CO2 laser is a state-of-the-art technology that is particularly effective for the following aesthetic treatments:
The laser works by creating microscopically small channels in the uppermost layer of skin while the surrounding skin remains untouched. This targeted treatment stimulates the skin's natural healing process by producing collagen and renewing the skin's structure.
Age spots are reduced by removing the pigmented cells, and the skin appears smoother and more even overall. Thanks to the precise method, healing is faster and the risk of side effects is low.
CO2 laser treatment offers numerous advantages that make it a popular choice in aesthetic medicine:
After the removal of age spots, it is important to care for and protect the skin appropriately. Sun protection in particular plays a central role, as the skin reacts more sensitively to UV rays after laser treatment.
In addition, your hands should not be put under too much strain in the first few days after the treatment, to support the healing process.
The result of a laser treatment to remove age spots is, as a rule, permanent. Pigment spots that have been removed rarely return with the same intensity. Nevertheless, new spots can form over time through renewed sun exposure.
As already mentioned, regular use of sun protection products is the main thing that helps here. This protects the skin in the long term and preserves the result of the laser treatment.
In addition to laser treatment, age-related volume loss in the hands can be treated with hyaluronic acid fillers.
According to our former patients, these fillers work wonders:
“For the first time I am completely satisfied with a hyaluronic acid treatment, and after just two days!” (Dermacare client)
This combination of pigment spot removal and volume restoration gives the hands a thoroughly rejuvenated and harmonious appearance.
Patients regularly ask us how painful a CO2 laser treatment is. I can reassure you here: removing age spots with a laser is largely low-pain. At the start, the skin is also treated with a numbing agent, so that you feel only a slight tingling during the treatment.
After the treatment, slight redness or swelling may occur, but this usually subsides after a few days. You will therefore soon be presentable again.
Would you like to find out how your hands, too, can look youthful and radiant again? With CO2 laser treatment at Dermacare, we offer you an innovative and gentle method to remove age spots effectively.

The skin is numbed at the start, so you usually feel only a slight tingling. A sensation of warmth or even burning is possible; removal by laser is considered largely low in pain.
The treatment procedure for removing pigment spots with the CO2 laser in Vienna at Dermacare is explained in detail below. Before every first treatment, a medical history questionnaire is completed. This allows possible risks to be identified and prevented.
This is followed by a detailed preliminary discussion with a dermatologist. Prepare for the discussion and speak openly about your wishes and expectations.
Before every treatment, a digital photograph of your skin is taken in order to document your treatment progress precisely. The skin is disinfected and, if necessary, numbed with an anaesthetic cream.
The area of skin is then treated with the special CO2 laser. To make the treatment more comfortable, the skin is cooled with cold air.
After the treatment, a cool pack is placed on the treated area for 10 minutes.
To prevent inflammation, an antiseptic cream is applied.
As an immediate reaction of the skin to the treatment, slight redness and swelling often occur, which disappear again on their own. A thin crust then forms in the lasered region. For aftercare of the crust, a choice of ointments and creams is available to support the skin's healing process.
Your treating doctors will give you comprehensive information on the aftercare and care of the affected area and are available at any time to answer your questions.
After the treatment, UV radiation should be avoided for several weeks, as it can promote unwanted pigmentation.
After about 4-6 weeks, a follow-up treatment can be carried out if required.
The treatment is carried out by our medically trained team under medical supervision — with the relevant additional training and many years of experience.
Your treatment team
The treatment price depends on the treatment effort and the size and number of the age spots and pigment spots, and can differ in individual cases. In such a case, the doctor will point this out to you during the consultation.

Under certain conditions, the costs of the consultation/treatment are partly reimbursed by the public health insurance fund (Gesundheitskassa) or, depending on your policy, by private health insurance, if you submit the invoice.
Describe your concern in a few short questions, with a photo if you like. You will receive a personal assessment and your cost estimate, free of charge and without obligation.
Age spots are caused mainly by UV radiation and usually appear from middle age onwards – especially on the hands, face and décolleté. Sun spots are also UV-related, but often appear earlier. All of them belong to the group of pigment spots and can be treated very well with the CO2 laser.
We will get back to you within 24 hours by phone or email. Non-binding — you decide afterwards.
