Skin tightening and skin rejuvenation with laser: treatment procedure

The treatment is virtually painless; a sensation of warmth or even burning is possible. Beforehand, an anaesthetic cream is applied, which needs up to 60 minutes to be absorbed.

  1. Anamnesis Questionnaire

  2. Consultation

  4. Laser treatment

  6. Anti-inflammatory cream

    To prevent inflammation, an antiseptic cream is applied.

    The immediate reaction of the skin to the treatment is often slight redness and swelling, which subside on their own. A thin crust then forms in the lasered region. For the post-treatment of the crust, ointments and creams are available to support the healing process of the skin.

Treatment with the CO2 laser is almost painless. A feeling of warmth, up to a burning sensation of the skin, is possible during laser treatment. A burning or sore feeling, like sunburn, may also be felt for several hours after treatment. Itching often occurs during the healing process; anti-inflammatory creams and ointments provide relief.

Fractional laser treatment is carried out as an outpatient procedure. Treatment takes place under local anaesthetic. General anaesthesia is not necessary. Before treatment, an anaesthetic cream is applied to the area to be treated and works for up to 60 minutes. After the application time, the cream is removed from the skin, and the pain sensitivity of the skin area to be treated is markedly reduced. For safety reasons, the doctor and the patient wear protective goggles throughout the laser treatment. The treatment takes between 15 and 45 minutes, depending on the size of the area to be treated. Patients are treated lying down. The fractional, pinpoint laser treatment can cause a slight burning sensation of the skin. The laser is lifted off repeatedly during treatment, and the treating doctor watches the reaction to the stimulus from the laser closely. If you would like to tell us something during the treatment, you can do so at any time. However, we ask that you keep the protective goggles on throughout the treatment. During laser treatment a smell reminiscent of burnt hair may develop. This is normal and harmless. After treatment the skin may feel like sunburn for a few hours. The redness subsides after one to 5 days, and slight swelling may occur for one to two days. As soon as new skin replaces the dead tissue, flaking occurs, which indicates that the healing process is beginning and new skin substance is being formed. Depending on the intensity setting of the laser, the skin's regeneration time, and therefore also the healing process, varies. During this time we recommend treating the area with an ointment that supports the healing process and at the same time has a soothing effect. Depending on the intensity of the treatment and the patient's individual circumstances, the reactions mentioned above vary from person to person. Downtime is 3 to 7 days, depending on treatment intensity. The formation of new collagen and elastic fibres takes several weeks, however, so the improvement in the skin's appearance can only be assessed after about 4–8 weeks. An optimal result, which lasts several years, is achieved with at least three treatments at intervals of four to six weeks, although individual lifestyle (sun, smoking, etc.) always plays a decisive role.

Treatment with the CO2 laser is a gentle and effective way of correcting the skin. Acne scars, pigment spots and stretch marks, also known as pregnancy stretch marks, are often perceived as bothersome and can be effectively removed with fractional laser therapy. The effect of the CO2 laser is based on activating the skin's natural regeneration mechanisms. In the first days after treatment the uppermost layer of skin peels off and is replaced by a new one, and the whole appearance of the skin is refined and smoothed. At the same time, the stimulated collagen production provides new firmness and elasticity, and fine lines and small scars disappear or are markedly reduced.

Noticeable results appear after the very first treatment. Experience shows that three to five treatments are needed to reach the desired treatment result. The treatments take place at intervals of four to six weeks. After laser treatment the skin is tightened and refined, and an even complexion creates a fresh overall impression. Pigmentation disorders and spots that appear with the natural ageing process of the skin can often be successfully removed after a single treatment with the CO2 laser. Smaller fine lines and scars are also visibly reduced after one treatment. To smooth wrinkles permanently, several sessions are usually needed. The surface of deeper scars can be smoothed with the CO2 laser so that they are less visible. Depending on skin condition, three to five treatments at intervals of four to six weeks are recommended for an optimal result. In a personal consultation we can give you a more precise assessment of the individual treatment result you can expect.

After treatment with the CO2 laser the skin may be red and feel like sunburn. Cooling the treated area is, however, not advised, so as not to interrupt the desired healing process. Wound ointments and moisturising creams relieve possible discomfort and speed up healing in the days after treatment. As long as there is still flaking, it should not be covered with make-up (risk of tattooing). Crusts should not be scratched off or rubbed away after showering. In the first 10 days, hot environments (sauna, hot showers…) should be avoided. Since the newly formed skin is very sensitive, direct sun exposure should be avoided for at least 4 weeks after treatment; after the crusts have fallen off, we recommend using SPF 50+ or higher several times a day. If you are prone to herpes, taking herpes prophylaxis for about one week after treatment is advisable. A follow-up check takes place after about four weeks.

CO2 laser treatment is one of the minimally invasive treatments and offers a particularly gentle yet effective way of renewing the skin and smoothing wrinkles. When the laser is used correctly by trained doctors, possible risks and side effects are comparatively low. Allergic reactions or risks such as those of surgical procedures can be ruled out with laser treatment. Redness and slight swelling after treatment, as well as the formation of a crust on the treated skin area, are normal and, like possible itching, are part of the skin's healing process. Superficial, small skin injuries that may bleed are also harmless. Pigment changes of the skin occur rarely and only disappear after a few weeks. In rare cases cold sores occur, which is why we recommend taking prophylaxis if you are prone to herpes.

Since the CO2 laser should be used on untanned skin, we recommend avoiding extended sunbathing and sunbed visits for about 4 weeks before treatment with the CO2 laser at the Dermacare institute in Vienna. If you are known to be prone to herpes, taking herpes prophylaxis after the treatment may be advisable.

The treatment for acne scar removal with a CO2 laser is carried out as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic – general anaesthesia is not necessary. Beforehand, a pain-relieving cream is applied to prepare the skin for the laser pulses. During the session, the patient lies comfortably, the laser works point by point and stimulates the skin to form new collagen – a slight feeling of warmth or burning is normal.

After the treatment, the skin feels like mild sunburn; redness and swelling subside within a few days, after which the skin begins to flake and visibly renews itself. The first results appear after 4–8 weeks; for an optimal, long-lasting result, three sessions at intervals of four to six weeks are usually recommended.

Since sunlight promotes skin aging, we generally recommend regular application of a suitable sunscreen. After the laser treatment, direct sunlight should be avoided for at least 4 weeks. We recommend using SPF 50+ several times a day.

In general, a pain-relieving cream applied before treatment is sufficient. To promote the healing process and relieve any discomfort that may occur, such as itching, we recommend suitable ointments and creams.
