In brief

  • For heavy sweating (hyperhidrosis), botulinum toxin is injected into the affected areas of skin and blocks the nerve impulses to the sweat glands.
  • The effect begins after a few days and lasts six to nine months on average.
  • The treatment takes around 30 minutes; a consultation and examination come first, as other causes are also possible.
  • It makes particular sense when aluminium chloride deodorants or medication are not enough; slight redness or tingling is possible.

A job interview. An important date. A performance in front of an audience. And then dark patches under the arms, damp palms, an unpleasant feeling that draws all the attention. Anyone who suffers from heavy sweating knows such situations only too well. Especially in social or professional moments, excessive sweating is not only annoying but also distressing.

The good news: you do not have to put up with it. Targeted treatment with Botox for sweating in the underarms can give you a better quality of life, ease and confidence in everyday life.

But how exactly does it work – and is Botox really a lasting solution for hyperhidrosis? What are the benefits of the treatment? And who is it suitable for?

When sweating becomes a burden

Sweating is basically something completely natural; it is how the body regulates its temperature. But when sweat production gets out of hand, it quickly becomes a torment. In around 2 to 3 percent of people sweating is particularly pronounced, especially under the arms but also on the hands and feet. This is known as hyperhidrosis. The causes are varied: hormonal changes, stress, genetic factors or certain medical conditions.

While many people try to get the problem under control with strong deodorant, changes of clothes or home remedies, the desired effect is often missing. The insecurity remains, and with it social withdrawal. For many affected people, sweating is not only a physical problem but above all an emotional one.

Botox for sweating: how the treatment works

What many people do not know: botulinum toxin – Botox for short – known from aesthetic medicine, can not only smooth wrinkles but also help effectively against heavy sweating. The active ingredient is injected with a fine needle directly into the affected areas of skin, usually the armpits but, if needed, also the palms or soles of the feet.

The effect is targeted and scientifically proven: Botox blocks the nerve impulses responsible for activating the sweat glands. The result: sweat production is markedly reduced locally, without disturbing the natural cooling mechanism of the body as a whole.

The effect starts just a few days after the treatment and lasts between six and nine months on average. After that, the treatment can simply be refreshed if needed.

Your benefits at a glance

Why are more and more people choosing Botox for sweating at Dermacare Vienna? The reasons are obvious:

  • Effective results: A single session is enough for noticeably less sweating.
  • Quick procedure: The treatment takes only around 30 minutes and is almost painless.
  • No downtime: You are able to socialise and work again straight away.
  • Regain your confidence: No more embarrassing stains, no damp hands when shaking hands – instead a fresh, dry feeling.

For people who deal with others a lot at work or are in the public eye, this is a real game changer. But in private everyday life, too, this method brings back a touch of carefree ease.

What should you know before the treatment?

Every treatment at Dermacare is preceded by a detailed consultation and examination. Not all sweating is the same, and sometimes another medical cause can be behind the sweat production. Our experienced specialist doctors take the time for your questions, analyse your individual situation and, if you wish, recommend a therapy tailored to you.

Important: Botox treatment for sweating makes particular sense when conventional remedies such as aluminium chloride deodorants or medication do not bring the desired effect. In severe cases the therapy can even be covered by health insurance.

Botox for hands and feet too?

Besides the underarms, excessive sweating on the hands or feet is also an issue that affects many people – especially in working life, in social contact or during sport.

Here too, Botox can be used in a targeted way to reduce sweating significantly. The treatment in these areas is somewhat more involved, but the results are convincing, especially for people who finally want to go through life with a dry handshake again.

Are there risks or side effects?

When carried out properly by our specialist doctors, Botox treatment is considered very safe. Slight redness, swelling or temporary tingling at the injection site are possible but usually disappear after a short time.

Detailed information beforehand goes without saying – at Dermacare, your safety and satisfaction come first.

Frequently asked questions

Botox (botulinum toxin or BTA) is a naturally occurring bacterial protein. It is secreted by the bacterium Clostridium Botulinum and isolated through complex purification steps. Botulinum toxin is used in aesthetic medicine to smooth wrinkles in the face, neck and décolletage and for treatment of increased sweat gland activity. In addition, Botox is very successful for migraine attacks.

The first effects usually appear after about 2–3 days, and the full effect is visible after about one week.

Botox is used to treat frown lines, forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet, but also lines on the nose (bunny lines), the chin and wrinkles around the corners of the mouth. The wrinkles in the skin appear in these areas due to the frequent contraction of the muscles, i.e. facial expressions. The treatment relaxes the muscles, the skin recovers and becomes smoother. As a result, the wrinkles that have formed in the epidermis also fade over time.

For wrinkle treatment, the results usually last 4–6 months, after which the effect slowly wears off and the treatment can be repeated.
