In brief

  • Permanent make-up generally lasts around two to five years, microblading around one to two years.
  • Reasons for earlier removal include a result you no longer like or that went wrong, or pigment placed too deeply.
  • At Dermacare, removal is carried out with a pico laser that shatters the colour pigments; they are carried away via the lymphatic system.
  • Several sessions are usually needed, and the next session is possible after four to six weeks.

Permanent make-up

Permanent make-up (PMU) is for many people a practical way of looking freshly styled every day without much daily effort. Particularly in recent years, the popularity of permanent styling has increased. This is largely thanks to the trend towards broader, more expressive eyebrows – after very thin brows were considered chic in the decades before. Because of the excessive plucking and waxing of the hairs this required, many women today face the problem that their eyebrows no longer grow back properly or at all. That is why many people have opted for the new microblading technique in recent years. Here, a blade is used to draw a hair-like structure that usually looks deceptively real, visually shaping a full, dense eyebrow.

How long does permanent make-up last?

The name permanent make-up is slightly misleading. The styling is by no means forever. Its durability depends on several factors. Above all, skin condition and age play a role. As a rule, PMU lasts around two to five years; with microblading the duration is a little shorter still, at around one to two years.

Especially in the early phase, when the permanent make-up is still fresh, there is quite a lot you can do to extend its durability. For example, you should avoid excessive UV exposure and sauna visits and instead give the treated area proper care.

Can PMU also be removed earlier?

If you do want to get rid of your PMU earlier, you need to turn to a specialist such as the Dermacare institute in Vienna. The reasons for early removal are very varied. In some cases, the original styling simply no longer matches the wearer's sense of aesthetics. Often, however, patients decide to have their permanent make-up removed because it did not produce an attractive visual result from the start. Since microblading in particular has boomed in recent years and the training for it is not difficult to obtain, many failed results occur in this field. Sometimes, though, the permanent make-up has also been placed too deeply. This is not only painful for clients during the process. It can also mean that the permanent make-up no longer disappears on its own.

How can permanent make-up be removed?

The most effective method for having PMU removed is laser. At Dermacare, the latest pico laser from Lutronic is used for this. The laser light emitted by the device shatters the colour pigments, which are then carried away via the lymphatic system over the following weeks. Thanks to the four different wavelengths, all colours can be removed without residue.

Permanent Make-up mit Laser entfernen

Permanent make-up removal at Dermacare is possible for eyebrows, lash-line enhancements, lip contours and beauty spots. Several sessions are usually necessary for an optimal result. How many sessions are needed in total depends on

  • the colour of the permanent make-up,
  • its size,
  • the depth of the pigment,
  • the amount of colour placed,
  • the function of the lymphatic system
  • and the patient's cooperation after the treatments.

After having the PMU treated, patients should support the skin's healing process with special creams and ointments. After four to six weeks, the next treatment session can then be scheduled.

Frequently asked questions

With the Q-Switched PICO laser, permanent make-up on the eyebrows, including microblading, eyelids and lips can be gently and effectively removed or corrected. Depending on the colour, colour depth and age of the PMU, different numbers of sessions are necessary to make the PMU invisible.

  • Eyebrows (Microblading)
  • Eyeliner (lash line)
  • Lip contouring
  • Beauty spots

During the medical consultation at Dermacare Vienna, the specialists draw up a treatment plan tailored individually to you and inform you extensively about the possible risks of treatment, the treatment result to be expected and the costs that will arise for you. Only after examining the PMU do the doctors at Dermacare determine how many sessions at what intervals are needed to achieve the desired treatment result. If treatment takes place, nothing is charged for the consultation. If treatment does not take place straight away, a fee of €60 is charged, which we will credit back to you against a future treatment.

During the laser treatment the colour pigments of the permanent make-up are gradually lightened until they finally disappear. The first results are already visible a few days after the first treatment with the Q-Switched Laser. Until the permanent make-up disappears completely, 4 to 6 treatments at intervals of 5 to 8 weeks are normally expected.

For complete removal of permanent make-up, 4 to 6 treatments at intervals of 5 to 8 weeks are usually required. The number of treatments required depends on factors such as the colour, size, depth and age of the permanent make-up, and can therefore only be estimated individually in a personal consultation. The intervals between treatments depend on the skin's individual healing characteristics and therefore also vary. At the first check-up after treatment, the progress of wound healing is assessed. Since the colours of the permanent make-up are lightened with every treatment, a visible change can be seen after just one session.
