In brief

  • The laser targets the melanin in the hair and destroys the hair follicles where growth begins.
  • Because follicles go through different growth phases, several treatments at intervals are needed.
  • With each treatment, up to 15% of the hairs in the target area are permanently removed.
  • An autumn offer until 15 November 2021 brought savings on legs and back.

Professional hair removal with laser is the best way to a permanently hair-free life. Today we explain how and why laser hair removal actually works, and what happens to the hair follicles in the process.

What happens to the hair follicles during laser hair removal?

Laser hair removal has changed the lives of millions of people. With rapid pulses of laser light, unwanted body hair is specifically removed and reduced. As treatment progresses, clients can feel and see a difference in their hair – but what really happens beneath the surface? Here we trace the complete path of a hair follicle during laser hair removal.

How and why hair removal targets the follicles

Hair follicles are tunnel-shaped structures located in the dermis (or inner layer) of the skin. Hair growth begins at the bottom of the follicle, where the hair root is nourished by blood from nearby blood vessels. As more cells are formed, the hair grows up the tunnel and out of the skin. Laser hair removal permanently reduces this growth by selectively targeting the melanin in body and facial hair and destroying the follicles where growth begins.

Hair growth cycles

Do you wonder why it can take almost 10 months to become completely hair-free with laser hair removal? This is because different follicles go through different phases of the cycle at the same time. While some follicles are in the growth phase, others may be in the resting phase. Some of your hairs are growing, while others are about to fall out. That is why several treatments at certain intervals are also needed for an optimal result. Hairs go through the following phases:

  • The anagen phase
In this phase, the hair is actively growing.
  • The catagen phase
In this phase, the hair is between growth and rest
  • The telogen phase
In this phase, the follicle is in a resting state (up to four months)

Destroying the follicle stops hair growth

With laser hair removal, up to 15% of the hairs in the target area are permanently removed with each treatment. Once hair follicles are destroyed, they can no longer produce new hairs. Since more and more hair follicles are destroyed with each treatment, hair growth is reduced so much that the need for shaving or waxing is reduced to a minimum.

Frequently asked questions

The term permanent hair removal is defined by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration USA) as a significant reduction of hair for a period longer than the hair cycle in the region. The oldest method by which permanent hair removal can be achieved is needle epilation. For some years now, however, laser and IPL epilation have been used for permanent hair removal with increasing success. The SHR method with 3 wavelengths is the state of the art in laser technology for permanent hair removal.

You can get a comprehensive skin analysis at Dermacare Vienna at our beauty institute in Vienna. Before every aesthetic treatment, your skin is analysed in a structured way to determine your skin type, moisture status, pigmentation and individual needs precisely. This results in a tailor-made treatment plan.

Long-term studies over several years have proven that the effect of professionally performed hair removal is of long-term duration: once hair follicles have been destroyed, they will no longer produce hair.

Most people have no side effects. A normal reaction is that the skin turns red immediately after the treatment. These skin reactions usually disappear within a few hours or a few days.
